Do you have grey hair? Then hair colour or hair dye isn’t something new to you. Do you know most Indian men and women still don’t know much about choosing the right hair colour or dye for their Indian hair? Some people worry about the possible damage hair dyes/colour could do and yes there are still people out there who think excessive exposure to such products can cause an increase in greying.

What is the difference between hair colour and hair dye? People often mistake the very basic difference between them which needs to be understood to consider what’s best for you and make your purchase accordingly. Hair colour is something that changes the colour to the other surface it might not last long and will begin to fade away with a few washes. Whereas hair dye penetrates the hair shaft and changes the colour from inside hence they last longer.

There are different types of hair dye like permanent hair dye that doesn’t fade with washes. It consists of chemicals like hydrogen peroxide, couplers and ammonia. Then there are the semi-permanent hair dyes that are hydrogen peroxide and ammonia-free. They come in both natural and synthetic variants. The colour molecules coat the outermost layer of the hair. And finally, the temporary hair dye that is called the hair colours can be washed away with just one shampoo wash. They don’t penetrate the hair cortex and colour the surface of the hair and the interesting thing is they come in some really exciting, funky and fun colours.

Homemade hair dyes will be great to experiment with. The best part is they are mild on the hair and also effective in the overall coverage. With frequent usage, the colour can last longer though it is more like semi-permanent hair colour. It not only helps save a lot of money, but the organic ingredients that go into the making of it are also much better on your hair. Tea and coffee with natural henna can give an additional colour. Walnut shells, rosemary, hibiscus act as binding agents. Juice of lemon carrot and beet add great texture and bring a shiny gloss to the hair.

Whether it’s covering your greys or you just want to change the look, there is a cost that hair colouring comes with. Make sure to do a patch test. And the only way to fix it is by regularly following a hair care routine. Olive oil and honey work wonderfully together on coloured hair.
